Christi Mathews
Christi is a native Texan (named after the city of Corpus Christi) who landed in Florida in 1981. She prefers acrylic on canvas or 100% rag paper for her paintings. And she definitely prefers realism. "If you're going to be a wildlife artist," she says, "the birds and animals have to be correct." Christi scours the waterways of Florida in a 17-foot yellow canoe, taking thousands of reference photographs. Her wonderful portraits of manatees, majestic panthers, and natural scenes capture the essence of South Florida, the Keys and the Everglades.
