Miami's Patrick Dorsy, fishing with Tony Arias and guided by Capt. Dave Denkert took first place in the 11th. Annual Mercury Outboard Southernmost Light Tackle Anglers Masters on Sunday.

"It was another great event, and we had plenty of fish caught," said tournament director and founder Gary Ellis, of Islamorada. "We had several team score slams this year, and everybody had a great time."

Dorsy caught two permit, two tarpon and four bonefish during the two-day event to amass 1,100 points, take the win and solidify a first place standing in the Redbone Celebrity Tournament Series. The series, consisting of the Mercury Baybone later this month, and the Mercury/Cheeca Redbone in November, pairs celebrity and amateur anglers together to fish for bonefish, permit and tarpon with the common goal of raising money for cystic fibrosis research.

Islamorada's Jim Bokor placed second in the overall grand champion standings with two tarpon, two permit and two bonefish for a total of 900 points. He fished with Capt. Tim Hoover. Ft. Pierce's David Kesar placed third with 700 points, fishing with Capt. Tom Rowland, followed by Dan Zicari and Capt. Mark Krowka, also of Ft. Pierce, with 600 points.

In team honors, Jay Berger, of Key Biscayne and Steve Peet of New Canaan, CT won while fishing with Islamorada's Capt. Rick Moeller with two bonefish, a permit and a tarpon. Berger, head tennis coach for the University of Miami, took top honors in the Celebrity Grand Champion Division.

Local fishing guide, author and owner of The Saltwater Angler, Jeffrey Cardenas took top honors in the Pro Celebrity division after catching a tarpon on fly and a permit and bonefish on bait. In addition, on Friday, Cardenas won the 6th. Annual Seamaster Superfly by catching a permit, bonefish and tarpon on fly tackle. Cardenas used the same fly, a Del's Merkin, to take all three species. It was the first time in the history of the Redbone Series that an angler caught a slam on fly on the same day.

"We got pretty lucky on Friday," Cardenas said. "We were very fortunate. I've never had anything like this happen to me in a tournament. We almost had our SLAM on Saturday, but the bonefish we caught came up an inch short." Anglers will gather at the end of the month for the second leg of the Redbone series in Key Largo at the Westin Beach Resort for the Mercury Baybone.

In that unique format, anglers can fish for permit and bonefish, but no points will be awarded to a team unless they have caught a bonefish.
